Positioning
Feel trapped by Elementor’s Container, column and section structure? The Positioning extension is your key to true layout freedom. Take any widget, container, or column and place it exactly where you want on the page – overlapping other elements, sticking to corners, or floating freely. Choose between Relative, Absolute, or Fixed positioning and use pixel-perfect controls for top, right, bottom, and left. It’s the ultimate tool for creating unique, layered designs, custom icons, badges, or decorative elements that don’t fit into a standard grid.

Multiple Positioning Modes
Not all positioning is the same. Select the mode that matches your creative goal. Use Relative to nudge an element from its normal spot without affecting others. Use Absolute to place it at an exact coordinate within its parent container. Need something to stay on screen? Fixed positioning locks it to the viewport, perfect for custom floating buttons or alerts.
- Relative Positioning: Perfect for fine-tuning alignment, like shifting an icon a few pixels to the left.
- Absolute Positioning: The go-to for placing decorative elements, badges, or custom shapes anywhere inside a section.
- Fixed Positioning: Create sticky elements like a custom support chat icon or a promotional bar that follows the user down the page.
Pixel-Perfect Coordinate Controls
Forget dragging and guessing. Use the numerical fields – Top, Right, Bottom, Left – to set an element’s location down to the pixel. Place a “NEW” badge 10px from the top and 15px from the right of a product card. Or, use the “From Center” option to position an element based on the center of its parent, which is incredibly useful for perfectly centered overlapping effects.
- Four-Sided Control: Set distances from all four edges of the parent container for total control.
- Center-Based Positioning: Use “From Center” to easily create circular designs or elements that radiate from a central point.
- Smart Guidance: The interface warns you about conflicting settings (like using “Left” and “From Center” together) to prevent mistakes.

Frequently Asked Questions For Positioning
What's the difference between "Absolute" and "Fixed" positioning?
Absolute positions the element relative to its nearest positioned parent container (like a section). If you scroll, the element moves with that section. Fixed positions the element relative to the browser window (the viewport). It stays in the exact same spot on the screen even when you scroll. Use Fixed for elements you want always visible.
When I use Absolute positioning, what is it positioned "relative" to?
It’s positioned relative to the nearest parent element that has a position set to anything other than static (which is the default). In Elementor, if you apply Absolute positioning to a widget inside a column, it will typically be positioned relative to that column’s boundaries. For more control, you might set the parent Container to position: relative first.
Will this work properly on mobile and tablet?
Yes, but you must check your responsive views. An element placed 100px from the left on desktop might be off-screen on mobile. Always use Elementor’s responsive editing mode (Desktop/Tablet/Mobile icons) to adjust the position values (Top, Left, etc.) for each device. You might need completely different positions for mobile.
Can I use this to make a unique-shaped section or break out of a container?
Yes, this is a powerful use case. By setting a section to position: relative and then placing an absolutely positioned image or shape inside it with negative values (like Left: -50px), you can make elements visually “break out” of their container’s box, creating dynamic, non-rectangular layout edges that are very modern.
