Every popup needs a way out, and by default that way out is a small X in the corner. It is also the one part of the popup you cannot restyle. The Popup Trigger widget in Master Addons for Elementor replaces it with a real element: you drop it inside a popup, write your own button text, pick an icon, and decide what the click does.
It closes the popup, but it also controls how long the popup stays away afterwards and whether the visitor gets sent somewhere else. This guide covers every setting in the widget.
What the Popup Trigger widget does #
The widget renders a button inside a popup. Clicking it closes that popup and applies the rules you set on the button: which close action to run, when the popup is allowed to appear again, and which URL to open afterwards.
It has three tabs. Content holds the button action, the delay, the redirect, the label, the icon, and the alignment. Style controls colors, typography, borders, spacing, and the hover state. Advanced carries the usual Elementor options.
The widget only works inside a popup. Drop it on a normal page and there is nothing for it to close, which is why the editor panel shows a note about it.

How to add the Popup Trigger widget #
Open your popup in the Elementor editor. In the Elements panel, search for Popup Trigger, or scroll to the Master Addons section where the widgets carry a purple MA badge. Drag it into the popup layout.
It loads with a working close button labeled Close Popup, so you edit from a button that already works rather than a blank one.
Choose the button action #
Open the Content tab and look at Button Action. It decides what the click does, and it has three options.
- Close Popup: hides the popup and applies the Show Again Delay you set below. The popup can come back later.
- Close Permanently: hides the popup and stops it appearing again in that visitor’s browser. The Show Again Delay setting disappears when you pick this, because the delay no longer applies.
- Go Back to Referrer: closes the popup and sends the browser back one step in its history, so the visitor returns to the page they came from.
Set the Show Again Delay #
With Close Popup selected, the Show Again Delay dropdown decides how long the popup waits before it is allowed to appear again for that visitor.
The list runs from one minute to one month: 1, 3, 5, 10 and 30 minutes, then 1, 3, 6 and 12 hours, then 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 20 days, and finally 1 month. No Delay leaves the popup free to appear again on the next page load.
The close time is saved in the visitor’s own browser storage against that popup’s ID, so every other popup on the site keeps its own separate timing. It survives page loads and browser restarts, but it does not follow the visitor to another device, and clearing browser data resets it.
Redirect visitors when the popup closes #
Turn on Redirect to URL when Closed and a URL field appears. The popup closes first, then the browser moves to your link.
- The URL field takes any link, and it accepts Elementor dynamic tags, so the destination can come from the post or a custom field instead of being hard coded.
- Link options are the standard Elementor ones, so you can open the destination in a new tab or add a nofollow attribute.
- It works with Close Popup and Close Permanently. Go Back to Referrer does not use it, since that action already sends the visitor somewhere.
Set the button text and icon #
Button Text is a plain text field with dynamic tag support. The default is Close Popup, but wording like “Maybe later” or “Continue to the site” tells a visitor what the click will do.
Icon Position places an icon relative to the label. Set it to Before Element or After Element and a Select Icon control appears, preset to the X icon. Pick a different Font Awesome icon from there, or upload your own SVG. Set Icon Position to None for a text-only button.
Button Align sets the button to the left, center, or right. It is a responsive control, so you can align it differently on desktop, tablet, and mobile.
Style the button #
Open the Style tab for the General section, which splits into Normal and Hover tabs.
- Color, Background Color, and Border Color: set per state, so the button changes on hover.
- Box Shadow: also per state, for a lift on hover.
- Transition Duration: how fast the hover change runs, in seconds.
- Typography: the standard group control, so your global fonts apply.
- Border Type and Border Width: solid, double, dotted, dashed, or groove, with width set per side.
- SVG Icon Size and Extra Icon Spacing: the icon size and the gap between icon and label.
- Padding, Margin, and Border Radius: the button size and corner rounding. Padding and margin are responsive.
Hide the default close button #
Adding a Popup Trigger does not remove the X in the corner. To make your button the only exit, open the popup settings and switch off Show Close Button, then place your trigger inside the popup layout. The popup settings guide covers where that option lives.
Use more than one trigger in a popup #
Each Popup Trigger keeps its own action, delay, and redirect, so a single popup can offer two different exits. A common pairing is a “Remind me later” button set to Close Popup with a one day delay, next to a “Never show this again” button set to Close Permanently.

- Newsletter popups with a styled close button that matches the offer instead of a grey X.
- Age gates and entry screens where a “No” button uses Go Back to Referrer.
- Exit intent offers with a “Remind me tomorrow” button set to a one day delay.

- Upsell popups where closing redirects to a cheaper plan or the pricing page.
Tips for working with the Popup Trigger widget #
- Say what the button does. “Maybe later” tells the visitor what happens next. An X does not.
- Match the delay to the offer. A one hour pause suits a discount. A one month pause suits a survey.
- Give people a permanent opt out. A second trigger set to Close Permanently is friendlier than a popup that keeps returning.
- Test in a private window. The delay is stored in the browser, so a fresh window is the fastest way to see the popup again.
- Set a hover state. A color shift on hover tells visitors the button is clickable.
