    What Is Dark Mode?

The dark mode is a display setting for user interfaces, such as laptops or smartphones. While there are various colors and hues, there are no dark texts showing up against a white screen in this mode. Instead, a dark or black background presents light-colored texts and interface elements on top of it.

The dark mode is known by a few other names, such as dark theme, black mode, light-on-dark, night mode. Apart from browsers, smartphones, etc., many operating systems offer dark mode to their users.

The dark mode’s general idea is that it reduces the emitted light from device screens while maintaining the absolute minimum color contrast ratios needed for the interface elements to be readable. However, the idea is not something new. In fact, the dark mode predates the light mode by a couple of decades. With the advancement of technology, came the light theme. And funnily enough, that same advancement has brought the user’s interest in dark mode back to life.

    Why Dark Mode Is Necessary?

There are certain advantages that dark mode can offer. They are as follows:

    Reduced Energy Consumption

A most commonly acknowledged scientific advantage of the dark mode is that it reduces energy consumption with AMOLED and OLED displays.

On OLED and AMOLED panels, each pixel lights up individually. In the light mode, all the pixels light up, and in turn, the display demands more power input. However, in dark mode, all the pixels do not need to light up. As a result, the display does not ask for as much power input as it does in light mode.

However, only OLED and AMOLED displays can enjoy the power-saving option from the dark mode.

    Reduced Blue Light Emission

Blue light is a visible light spectrum with high energy that has the shortest wavelength. According to experts, excessive exposure to blue light can cause your body to secrete less melatonin. Melatonin plays a vital role in getting you proper sleep.

The Sun is the most significant source of blue light. However, the devices that you use secrete trace amounts of blue light as well. But if you are using the dark mode, it will cut the harmful blue light, ensuring you a more sound sleep.

    Better for Low-light Settings

The dark mode is more suitable for a low-light setting, such as in the bed or a cinema hall. That way, even if you are using your devices, it will not bother other people unintentionally.

    How to Setup Dark Mode?

WordPress comes equipped with an admin color scheme. However, none of the default layouts cut down the white light coming from the screen. But no worries, because there is a way to set up dark mode in your WordPress site. You can set up dark mode in your WordPress website through a plugin.

First of all, you will need to install and activate the WordPress Dark Mode plugin. You can directly find it in the WordPress plugin directory. You can access the directory through the admin dashboard in the plugins section.

How to Add Dark Mode To Your WordPress Site Using A Plugin

First of all, you will need to install and activate the WordPress Dark Mode plugin. We are going to be using the Blackout: Dark Mode Widget for this article. You can directly find it in the WordPress plugin directory. You can access the directory through the admin dashboard in the plugins section.

    Install Blackout Dark Mode Plugin

After you have installed it, you will have to activate the dark mode plugin. Upon activation, access your WordPress admin dashboard. Click on the Settings option from your admin board. From the flyout menu, choose the Blackout menu.

You will see various options. From there, click on the Enable OS Aware Dark Mode button. Once enabled, it will allow the visitors to see the night mode version of your WordPress site when their device has a dark mode setting.

To make the option to switch to dark mode whenever they want to available, find the Show Floating Switch option. Click on the button to enable it. It means that regardless of the user’s interface setting, the user will be able to switch to the dark mode when they are on your site.

There are many other options available. For example, you can choose the dark mode colors, customize your floating switch styles, and many more. However, only a portion of all the options will be available to you with the free version. When you have finished your tasks, click on the Save Changes button to save your settings.

Now to make sure that the plugin is operating smoothly, do a test run to see if everything is working out. You can also fix where your floating switch will appear on a user’s screen.

How to Add Dark Mode to WordPress Admin

WordPress offers different admin color schemes. However, none of the default color schemes can reduce white light emission from your screen despite their differences. Fortunately, this dark mode plugin takes care of that issue as well.

For this, you will once again have to access the Settings menu. From there, you will have to enter the Blackout page and click on the General Settings tab. You will see an option to let you choose to enable the dark backend mode. Turn that option on and save the changes you have made by clicking on the Save Settings button at the bottom of the page.

After you have enabled the dark backend mode, you should see a new switch in the top bar of your admin panel. If you want to enable dark mode, click on the button and switch it to the dark mode setting. However, it would be best to use the dark mode only when you are in a dark environment to take better care of your eyes.

Note that the dark mode is not one of the admin color schemes that WordPress provides. So, even if you are using the dark mode setting, you can use one of WordPress’s admin color schemes alongside it without any difficulty. To set this, click on the Users option and go to the Profile page from the flyout menu. From that page, click on an option under the Admin Color Scheme page.

However, you will have to switch off dark mode to notice the other admin color scheme option.

    Wrapping Up

Adding dark mode to your WordPress site adds a nice extra feature to your site. But that is not all it does. It also improves user accessibility and experience. With its uprising popularity, introducing dark mode to your WordPress site should drive up your site’s traffic.

Now that you have reached the end of this article, we hope you now know how to set WordPress dark mode in one click. And now, you can introduce the night mode to your site and enhance the user’s experience.
